Transitional Kennedy, Los Gatos
THE CONCEPT
Nestled in a hillside location in Los Gatos, the 50-year-old home featured timeless details such as hardwood floors, open beams, and large picture windows that framed the hillside views. The home’s 1970s pseudo-contemporary style was dated and the living spaces lacked the open flow desired by a young family that loved socializing. The clients’ goals were to create flow, improve the kitchen’s functionality, and develop a warm California aesthetic that reflected the family home’s heritage and setting.
MATERIALS
The custom hood and 36″ WOLF cooktop serve as the focal point of the room, drawing the eye with the subtle graphic of the AKDO herringbone mosaic backsplash tile. The Caesarstone quartz in Frosty Carrina reflects the natural light and provides a neutral contrast to the rich wood floors and ceiling. The double ovens were moved to the refrigerator wall to create a work triangle with the cooktop and Whitehaus Farmhaus Fireclay sink.
NOOKS AND CRANNIES: STORAGE SOLUTIONS
Tall buffet-style cabinetry was designed to provide more storage and easy access to hidden countertop appliances. Eliminating a dumb waiter created the opportunity for a custom, built-in pantry. Door-activated lighting was included to increase the usability of the space and quickly illuminate the space for small children accessing snacks.
RELAX AND ENJOY THE VIEW
The Living Room, boasting some of the best views of Silicon Valley, was opened up to the kitchen to create a clear site line and flow between the spaces. The fireplace was given a rustic-modern update with a veneer ledger stone and the new custom cabinets provide space for the large screen TV and the family’s entertainment system.
Dual Laundry & Mudroom
Front-loading appliances created the opportunity for more countertop surfaces for laundry tasks. On the opposite wall, a built-in ironing board and closet were removed to create space for a designated drop-zone with cabinets and drawers for children’s coats and shoes, as well as storage for household cleaning items. The finish selections took their neutral cues from the Kitchen.
