Sophisticated-Modern Kitchen

Modern Communication Hills, San Jose

The Concept

The client’s main goals were to update the builder-grade kitchen with failing cabinet finishes, update worn-out appliances, brighten up the space, and to increase functionality and cabinet organization. Designer Alex Volosciuc worked with the homeowner to adapt the space to closer align with the client’s contemporary kitchen ideas. Its refreshed style provided a look that was clean and modern, reducing the amount of surface clutter.

Capturing Storage

One of the client’s wishes was to build in a cabinet that hid loose trash cans from site. To do this, the designer extended the edge of the counter and cabinetry past the wall to add a trash-can cab.

Finding New Space

By extending the cabinetry, it gave the designer the opportunity to create additional storage underneath the window. These new cabinets have sliding doors which are a great option when you need extra storage but don’t have room for swing doors. The integration of the two-tones and the countertop extending all the way to the wall is a beautiful aesthetic addition.

Room for Entertainment

A client favorite – a small entertainment cabinet and bar area was created at the entrance of the kitchen! This area includes a wine refrigerator as well as storage to hang wine glasses. The cabinet to the right of the entertainment area features retractable drawers used to keep the microwave and other contents out of sight.

The Materials

Ceramic tile in “Cashmere” from TileShop lines the kitchen walls and adds to the sophisticated nature of the kitchen with its simplicity and soft tones. The Caesarstone quartz countertop in Calcatta Nuvo ties the contemporary kitchen together. The cleaf laminate cabinetry also adds the perfect touch of “sophisticated-modern” while the black cabinetry hardware from Top Knobs adds the perfect contrast. A designer favorite is the faucet from Brizo that has a knurled finish!
