Upscale Features in Today’s Bathrooms
Homeowners are gravitating toward heated floors and higher quality lights, especially LED lighting. Improved lighting provides a better color rendering effect, making the application of makeup easier. LED lighting is also used for design appeal with placement behind mirrors and under cabinetry. Colored lighting is making a gradual appearance as well. For instance, blue LEDs placed in the shower give it a calming ambiance.

Showers Getting Larger
Homeowners are expanding their showers. In many cases, we will take space from the tub area to make a larger shower experience. Sometimes the bathtub is done away with entirely. Modern space-saving tubs are growing in popularity. Because they are freestanding, and not built in, they make a smaller footprint in the bathroom both visually and physically.

Grab Bars No Longer Taboo
One thing I always recommend to people while we are designing their new bathroom is to consider aging in place preparations. People feel shy talking about aging in place, but features like grab bars are useful for someone at any age, even young children. You can install blocking in the walls while they are opened up during the construction phase of your remodel. Even if you do not install the grab bars now, the proper infrastructure is there to support them if and when you are ever decide to.

You Will Love This New Product
Relatively new to the residential bathroom market, and not often available in big box stores, are thermostatic valves. These ingenious valves regulate both water temperature and pressure. This is an upgrade item homeowners seem to love but is not something they would know to ask for.

Small Changes Can Make Large Impact
If a homeowner has a very limited budget, there are still plenty of upgrades you can make to a bathroom to make it feel like new. Changing out your old toilet is a great way to enhance your space. Changing floor will make space feel nice and new. Comfort height toilets are increasingly popular and come with a variety of features including lowered water use. Replacing the vanity is another visible upgrade. In this photo you can see the vanity and toilet match. A new floor is another nice design enhancement to any bathroom.

Design Resources for Bathroom Ideas
Before meeting with a remodeling company or designer, it’s a good idea to look through pictures of bathrooms to gather ideas for your own project. There are plenty of wonderful resources at your fingertips. Our Next Stage Design website includes a bathroom portfolio with pictures from projects we designed and built. The website Houzz is another fabulous resource for photos. Pinterest is another site I recommend in addition to design and architectural magazines. For a more interactive resource, attend a remodeling or design seminar where you can connect with others like yourself. You will gain insight from the questions they ask in addition to ones you already have.
