Granite Countertops are the Most Popular Choice
Today’s homeowners choose granite more often than any other countertop material because it is so durable. It is scratch, stain, and heat resistant. Granite comes in a wide variety of colors and patterns. It is easy to clean, lasts forever, and more common options are competitively priced. While granite is low maintenance, it is not no-maintenance. Granite is a porous stone and must be periodically resealed. Otherwise it could stain and harbor bacteria.

Solid Surface Countertops
Solid surface, or acrylic countertops offer great flexibility and low cost. They are non-porous and come in a wide variety of colors and patterns. Scratches and discoloration are buffed/sanded out leaving countertops looking new. You can even cut out and replace a badly damaged area. Proper seam blending makes a new section almost indistinguishable.

Engineered Stone Improves Upon Granite and Acrylic
Manufactured or engineered stone really combines the best of both worlds. Some varieties are called quartz. It is non-porous, scratch- and stain-resistant, and long-lasting. Made from crushed stone and resins, this countertop choice looks natural but is available in more color options. Cooks should avoid placing hot pans on engineered stone to prevent cracking or discoloration. Most options are priced somewhere in between granite and solid surface.

Plastic Laminate Countertops – An Economical Option
Though today’s homeowners are trending toward higher end countertop materials for their kitchen and bathroom remodeling projects, there are still places where a laminate surface may make the most sense. If adding a countertop to a mudroom, laundry room, crafting or sewing room, a laminate can keep costs down and function perfectly. Laminates resist grease and staining. They are easy to clean. However they will knick and scratch easily and cannot take direct heat.
Marble Makes a Lovely Statement Piece
The classic look of marble is timeless. While softer than granite and other countertop materials making it easy to scratch, and subject to dulling from acids, marble is an excellent surface for baking. Available in an assortment of colors and patterns, marble is one of many excellent countertop options for bathrooms.

Soapstone Gives Instant Aged Look
If your design calls for a worn look then consider soapstone for your new countertops. Soapstone is durable, resistant to acids and alkalis. It will scratch easily because it is so soft, however it can be sanded or buffed down. It can handle the heat of a pot and is less porous than granite. Many homeowners use it for built-in sinks.
